25-year-old Chanchal was born female, but always wondered why he didn’t have a penis. After all, how could one look so different from how one felt? Was this how others felt too? Was this common? Chanchal spent years looking for answers before coming out to himself, and then to his loved ones. His is a story of self-acceptance in its truest sense – where there are no apologies and no shame for being who you are.
The second in 101 India’s series, #ComingOut, this film focuses on Chanchal’s life today. It’s cute, it’s heartwarming and you won’t be able to stop smiling at the various aww-inducing moments. And it’ll hit you as he gives you a tour of his hometown Jabapur, that you and him might actually be quite similar – in how you might love your family, or respect your partner or crave to walk through the winding lanes of a place you once called home. And that’s what’s beautiful – when you forget who he was born as, and just look at him like you should, like you would any other human being.
